Vintage Pyrex

Vintage Pyrex usually means Corning's colorful opal ware: the opaque bowls, casseroles and fridgies in solid colors and printed patterns made from 1945 to the mid-1980s. To identify it, check the base for a PYREX backstamp and model number, then match the pattern and shape. Everybody's got a Pyrex story, and we pack every bowl like it's a family heirloom, because to somebody it is.

From lab glass to kitchen icon

Corning introduced Pyrex kitchenware in 1915. The pieces collectors chase most are the opaque, colored "opal ware" bowls, casseroles and refrigerator dishes made in the mid-20th century, in solid colors and printed patterns.

Patterns collectors chase

Butterprint (the one with the farm couple and roosters), Gooseberry, Snowflake, Pink Daisy and Spring Blossom are some of the best known. The Primary Colors nesting bowls (401 to 404) and the spouted Cinderella bowls (441 to 444) are favorites too. Many patterns came in more than one colorway, and complete sets in matching condition are especially sought after.

How to tell vintage Pyrex

Flip it over. Vintage Corning pieces usually have a backstamp with PYREX in capital letters and a model number. Pattern, color and shape are the best clues, though, since the logo alone isn't a perfect dating tool.

Condition and care

Hand wash only. Dishwasher detergent can permanently dull the painted finish, which collectors call DWD (dishwasher damage). Also check for flea bites on rims, scratches and utensil marks inside, and faded or worn patterns. Avoid sudden temperature changes with any old glass bakeware.

Is it worth anything? Pattern and color matter, but condition matters just as much. A glossy, bright bowl beats a dull one in the same pattern every time.

Vintage Pyrex FAQ

Can vintage Pyrex go in the dishwasher?

We don't recommend it. Dishwasher detergent can permanently dull the colored finish on vintage Pyrex. Hand wash with mild soap.

What are the most popular vintage Pyrex patterns?

Butterprint, Gooseberry, Snowflake, Pink Daisy and Spring Blossom are among the best known, along with the solid Primary Colors nesting bowls and Cinderella bowls.

How can I tell if my Pyrex is vintage?

Look for a backstamp with PYREX in capital letters and a model number, then match the pattern and shape. Opal ware in printed patterns is almost always older Corning production.

Is vintage Pyrex worth anything?

Some is. Common patterns are usually affordable, while scarce patterns and colorways, promotional pieces, complete sets and glossy, chip-free condition bring much more.

What does DWD mean?

Dishwasher damage: a hazy, faded or rough finish caused by dishwasher detergent. It can't be reversed, so we call it out on camera when we see it.
